Lactation Services
When you become pregnant, your body prepares to make milk to nourish your baby. In the early days of your baby’s life, his or her stomach is very small - so breastfeeding is as much about comfort as it is nutrition. It can provide safety, security and peace for both your baby and you.
The first milk you have in your breasts is called colostrum, and it is the perfect first food for your baby. Colostrum is gentle and easy for a newborn to digest. Breast milk in general is extremely high in antibodies, which help to boost your baby’s immature immune system. It is also high in fats, which help your baby’s brain develop. Though nursing is a natural process, it does take practice and patience. You and your baby are learning together.

Guidance from Certified Lactation Consultants
Lactation consultants at Northwest Healthcare are specially trained registered nurses who strive to enhance your breastfeeding experience. We recommend that you schedule an appointment with a lactation consultant if you are having issues or problems with nursing. Typical concerns include low milk supply, sore nipples, trouble with proper latching, poor feeders and the special needs of NICU graduates. Your consultant will review your concerns, observe you and your baby, and offer guidance to help you both get the most out of breastfeeding. After the initial session, you may call your consultant with any questions or schedule an additional consultation if needed.
