Drive collects 4,002 jars of peanut butter for Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona
TUCSON, AZ –Northwest Healthcare is spreading the love in Pima County! In celebration of National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day on April 2, our team collected more than 4,002 jars – that’s 80,314.5 ounces – of peanut and other nut butters during our third annual Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive to help stock the shelves at Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. Last year’s drive collected 1,700 jars, so this year surpasses that number by far.
Peanut butter is a sought after item for food banks because of its high nutritional value and long shelf life. Yet, it is one of the least donated items.
“Northwest Healthcare not only supports the patients who come through our doors – we are also committed to supporting better health throughout our community,” said Brian Sinotte, FACHE, Market CEO of Northwest Healthcare. “Almost 14% of the Tucson population is facing food insecurity, which has a profound impact on health and well-being. With the Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive, we can help a vital community organization reduce hunger in our area.”
Our official donation numbers, collected by hospital, are:
- Northwest Medical Center: 2,092 jars (39,867 oz.)
- Oro Valley Hospital: 644 jars (13,179.5 oz.)
- Northwest Medical Center Sahuarita: - 673 jars (13,882 oz.)
- Northwest Medical Center Houghton: - 593 jars (13,386 oz.)
The grand total: 4,002 jars (80,314.5 oz.)! Given that 2 oz. of peanut butter makes one sandwich, this donation equals about 40,157 sandwiches!
We are so thankful to everyone who donated to help stock the pantries of our friends and neighbors!
