Oro Valley Hospital Launches Intensive Outpatient Program
5/6/2019
Tucson, AZ – Oro Valley Hospital announced the launch of a new outpatient program for patients with mental health and substance abuse conditions affecting their ability to function. The intensive outpatient program (IOP) offers care to patients who may need more than once-a-week outpatient therapy. The IOP office is located on the Oro Valley Hospital campus.
The program, overseen by psychiatrist Matthew Malone, D.O., includes group therapy three hours a day, three days a week. Patients are typically enrolled for six to 12 weeks. Patients receive:
- Initial evaluation and psychosocial assessment to determine appropriateness for program
- Individual, group and/or family counseling
- Treatment for anger management, chronic depression, anxiety, grief or traumatic experience
- Skills to make healthy lifestyle changes, recognize and avoid triggers, and relapse prevention
- Coping strategies
- Multidisciplinary treatment/discharge planning
According to Malone, “The IOP is appropriate for patients experiencing impaired living skills (such as role performance and caring for themselves) and who may be in an outpatient therapy plan which is not meeting their needs. A more intensive therapy schedule may often be what they need if they don’t qualify for inpatient care.”
Patients who are 21 years of age and older with a psychiatric diagnosis qualify for the program as long as they are not an imminent danger to themselves or others. Patients must also be competent to consent to voluntary treatment.
Erinn Oller, Oro Valley Hospital Chief Administrative Officer said, “We’re finding that in addition to the therapy benefits that patients experience, they are also building new friendships. This has been a much needed service in our community and we’re pleased to make it available.”
