Northwest Healthcare Delivering Quality Care and More to Southern Arizona
3/28/2025
TUCSON, AZ – Northwest Healthcare provided care to thousands of area residents in 2024, with 1,070,700 patient encounters across its network of physician clinics and other outpatient sites of care.
In addition to delivering safe, quality, compassionate healthcare, we help those in need, support charitable organizations, and contribute to the area economy. Our most recent Community Benefit Report shows our impact totaled an estimated $550 million in 2024.
That number includes the $7.2 million we invested in capital projects to enhance – and expand access to – healthcare services, facilities, and technologies. As just one example, Northwest Urgent Care’s footprint has grown to 17 locations across Southern Arizona. In addition, our four fully-staffed hospital emergency departments, two free-standing emergency rooms, and many physician clinics are busy serving patients. Our network now includes more than 80 sites of care.
“Our work to grow and enhance the medical services we provide is ongoing, as we continuously improve our safety and quality and support access to healthcare for our community,” said Brian Sinotte, FACHE, market CEO of Northwest Healthcare. “From providing care to our most vulnerable residents to supporting local charitable organizations, we are proud to make an impact on the health, well-being and quality of life in Southern Arizona.”
Northwest Healthcare’s emergency rooms provide lifesaving, medically necessary care at more than 128,400 patient encounters each year, treating all patients regardless of their ability to pay. In 2024, Northwest Healthcare provided over $167 million in charity and uncompensated care and provided resources to help patients in need access medications and medical support devices.
Our employees also support local organizations working to make a difference in social determinants of health. Through service projects such as the annual Jars of Love Peanut Butter Drive for the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, and contributions to charitable organizations such as Youth on their Own; Casa de los Niños; and Interfaith Community Services, we give back to the community throughout the year.
We took steps to enhance our interventional pulmonology program, where the pulmonology team performed its 300th robotic surgery in 2024. Through robotic-assisted, minimally-invasive bronchoscopy technology, specially-trained surgeons can biopsy tissue, diagnose lung cancer and pinpoint its stage in a single procedure. Our program attained national attention for achieving ‘diagnosis to final treatment’ in just 43 days – compared to the typical national average of eight months – which results in earlier treatment for significantly improved outcomes.
We continue to invest in cardiologists, cardiac surgery team and robust structural heart program as a whole. In addition, both Northwest Medical Center and Northwest Medical Center Houghton achieved Level IV trauma designation – demonstrating both hospitals’ ability to evaluate, stabilize and diagnose patients who have suffered traumatic injury.
“We are strategically applying our resources to help area residents have access to the care they need close to home,” said Sinotte. “These investments, along with our outstanding medical staff and employees, support our delivery of safe, high quality medical care and services for a positive patient experience.”
Our contributions to the communities we serve extends to our outstanding workforce. As one of Pima County’s larger employers, our annual payroll is $321.7 million.
We support the future of healthcare, and the future of those who will provide it, by training the next generation of physicians through our graduate medical education (GME) program. When its three specialized divisions – Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and the Transitional Year program – have been completely established, we will have 79 resident physicians. GME is a valuable opportunity to teach, model, and mentor exceptional physicians early in their careers – which, in turn, gives us further opportunities to provide direct, quality care to patients for generations to come.
Our commitment to healthcare providers of the future extends to helping nursing students prepare to care for patients and establish permanent roots in our communities. In view of that goal, we recently celebrated our first graduating nurses from our partnership with the Jersey College School of Nursing. We also collaborate with nursing schools at Pima College and Kino College.
Finally, in addition to supporting the local economy through job creation, Northwest Healthcare paid $12.47 million in taxes in 2024 – these dollars support local infrastructure and civic resources.
