Northwest Healthcare’s Cardiac Rehab Helps Heart Patients Heal
7/12/2024
People recovering from a cardiac event or serious pulmonary illness need excellent care to help them return to their optimal physical and emotional well-being. That’s why Northwest Healthcare dedicates so many experts – and resources – to its heart care program.
Ryan, at age 50 and in good health, didn’t expect to collapse with a sudden heart attack while he was out taking a leisurely walk in his Oro Valley neighborhood. He especially didn’t expect the kind of heart attack that required an urgent 911 call, quadruple bypass surgery, and 35 sessions of cardiac rehab at Northwest Medical Center – but that’s what happened.
It’s been a months-long journey, but Ryan is now walking back into his life. He graduated from cardiac rehab on Friday, July 12.
“I had a great experience,” he says of his carefully-monitored interval training exercise program. “This helped me more than anything, and I plan to keep up the habits at home.”
Laurie, another recent graduate of the program, was referred by her pulmonologist with big, long-term goals: To fight the effects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and bouts of pneumonia and bronchitis.
"I'm really pleased with my results," said Laurie, who calls Northwest her "go-to hospital."
"The exercises, particularly this arm machine, have really helped contribute to building my upper-body strength - I know I could get up now if I were to fall," she continued. "I wouldn't have had that confidence prior to cardiac rehab. They're very conscientious about safety here."
On her way out, Laurie received several congratulatory wishes, handshakes, and fist-bumps from the friends she made in the program.
Congratulations to both Ryan and Laurie – and to the cardiac rehab team who helped them take the first step – and then thousands more – towards their goal of recovery!
