Facts and Fiction: is Bladder Weakness or Discomfort a Natural Part of Aging?
12/8/2022
Welcome back to “Facts and Fiction,” a blog brought to you by Northwest Healthcare providers.
In this edition, urogynecologists and reconstructive pelvic surgeons Gina Cliett, M.D., FMPRS, and Anthony “Tony” Gaddi, M.D., FPMRS, address a frequently-asked, important question: “Is bladder discomfort, weakness, overactivity, or incontinence a natural part of the aging process?”
The answer? Yes, these problems are common – affecting more than 13 million Americans – but no, they aren’t normal. And the good news: They can be fixed.
The urinary issues you may be experiencing – racing to the bathroom often, or even having accidents before you get there – do increase as people (especially women) age, but they don’t have to go undiagnosed or untreated.
Most importantly, your pelvic floor doesn’t have to dictate your quality of life. If you’re having a hard time working or socializing because of your issue, take heart: Often, a medication, therapy, treatment, or surgery means you can enjoy your days (and sleep through your nights!) without the discomfort, embarrassment or limitations you’ve gotten used to.
Every bladder/urinary issue is unique, and so is every patient. We are specially trained to diagnose, treat and manage what is bothering you, and your choices will guide the plan.
